Animal Planet Announces Vegan-Based Cooking Show

New summer series sinks its teeth into animal-rights activism and butter-free cupcakes

Animal Planet is dipping its spoon into the food-programming genre with its upcoming summer series "Sweet Avenger," the channel announced Tuesday.

"Sweet Avenger" (a working title) will chronicle the valiant culinary struggle of Danielle Konya (pictured), owner of the bakery Vegan Treats, who's on a mission "to save animals one cupcake at a time" by spreading the message of veganism.

“I want to show people that by eating a vegan confection, you’re directly saving the lives of cows, chickens and thereby the environment and habitats of thousands of other exotic species, Konya said in the series' announcement, "There’s nothing appetizing about the suffering of 10 billion animals a year, and my treats can satisfy both the palate and the conscience.”

"Sweet Avenger" 'will also chronicle Konya's efforts to manage a staff that "does not all share her vegan view of the world."

The series will comprise 12 half-hour episodes, and will premiere this summer.
