Anne Hathaway is in negotiations to star in “The Last Thing He Wanted,” an adaptation of Joan Didion’s 1996 political thriller that will be directed by “Mudbound” filmmaker Dee Rees.

Marco Villalobos wrote the screenplay, which follows a journalist named Elena McMahon who abandons coverage of the 1984 presidential campaign in the midst of the Reagan administration’s arms-for-drugs Iran Contra scheme to fulfill her bed-ridden father’s last wish.

The film is currently in pre-production.

Elevated’s Cassian Elwes, who collaborated with Rees on “Mudbound,” will produce and The Fyzz Facility’s Wayne Marc Godfrey and Robert Jones will produce and finance. “Mudbound” earned four Oscar nominations, including one for Reese for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Hathaway won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Fantine in “Les Misérables.” She is represented by CAA and Management 360.

Bloom is handling sales of the film in Berlin.
