It’s been a week since Swedish electronic dance music DJ Avicii was found dead in Muscat, Oman, but fans still don’t know precisely what caused his death at the age of 28.

His family released a second statement on Thursday, obtained by Billboard, that suggests he may have committed suicide. The statement, however, does not definitively confirm it. It says the man, born Tim Bergling, “could not go on any longer.”

Stockholm, 26 April 2018

Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions.

An over-achieving perfectionist who travelled and worked hard at a pace that led to extreme stress.

When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most – music.

He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness.

He could not go on any longer.

He wanted to find peace.

Tim was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight.

Tim, you will forever be loved and sadly missed.

The person you were and your music will keep your memory alive.

We love you,

Your family

In 2016, the musician announced that he would retire from live performances due to health issues, citing a need “to make a change that I’d been struggling with for a while.”

Two post-mortem examinations showed “no criminal suspicion,” according to a police source with Oman’s Royal Police.

“Two autopsies were carried out, one yesterday and one today and we absolutely confirmed that there is no criminal suspicion in the death,” the police told Agence France-Presse last week.

A spokesperson for the late DJ has not yet responded to TheWrap’s request for comment.
