With an Academy Award in her duffle bag, Emma Stone is set to take to the tennis court alongside Steve Carell in “Battle of the Sexes,” Fox Searchlight’s comedy based on the famous 1973 match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs.
The trailer features Carell as a slick, quick-talking Riggs who comes with the idea to play King for one last chance at glory.King, meanwhile, has become known as the best player in women’s tennis as well as one of the most prominent feminists in the world. The match becomes a flashpoint for gender debates, but for Riggs and King, there are also personal stakes. While Riggs plays the role of the chauvinist heel to grab the public’s attention for both the match and himself, King deals with her own personal struggle with her sexuality and her changing relationship with her husband, Larry King (Austin Stowell).
Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (“Little Miss Sunshine”), the film also stars Andrea Riseborough, Elisabeth Shue, and Sarah Silverman. “Slumdog Millionaire” writer Simon Beaufoy penned the script, with Danny Boyle, Christian Colson, and Robert Graf producing.
“Battle of the Sexes” hits theaters September 22. Watch the trailer in the clip above.
