‘Birds of Prey’ Director Cathy Yan Got ‘Great’ Advice From Patty Jenkins of ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ (Video)

But she didn’t talk to David Ayer or Zack Snyder

Before unleashing “Birds of Prey,” director Cathy Yan sought advice from the only other female director in the DC Universe, Patty Jenkins, who was in the midst of filming “Wonder Woman 1984.”

“She’s awesome — there was a lot for us to talk about it,” Yan told TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven. “I called her a bunch of times throughout and she was very much working on ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ at the same time, and she gave a lot of great advice. It’s nice to have that camaraderie. It’s not even just among female directors — directing is actually quite lonely. There aren’t that many of us and what we do is pretty singular so I’m always very curious talking to other directors.”

However, Yan didn’t speak to David Ayer, who worked with Margot Robbie on “Suicide Squad,” or Zack Snyder, who directed DC installations “Man of Steel,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League.”

“I actually didn’t speak to either of them but Margot would tell me stories of working with David,” Yan added. Of course, Robbie first played Harley Quinn in Ayer’s 2016 “Suicide Squad.” “He worked with actors for a very long time, he had a very long rehearsal period with them, so I thought that was really interesting.”

“Birds of Prey” also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Ewan McGregor, Rosie Perez, Ella Jay Basco and Chris Messina. Christina Hodson wrote the script.
