Worst National Anthem Flub Ever? Canadian Singer Makes Up Nonsensical Lyrics (Video)

"The Star Spangled Banner" like you've never heard it before.

What do you do when you're singing the U.S. national anthem at a hockey game and you don’t know the words? Make up new words, of course.

That's precisely what Alexis Normand, Canadian singer (and we use that term loosely), did on Saturday when she performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the Memorial Cup hockey game between the Portland Winterhawks and the Halifax Mooseheads.

Not only did the Saskatoon-based jazz singer stumble through the lyrics, but when she didn't know the words she stopped singing altogether and then continued on to fumble the rest of the song. Luckily for Alexis, the audience members at the Canadian ice hockey tournament were good sports and helped her finish the song (although several players from both teams can be seen laughing into their gloves).

Normand told The Toronto Star that she was asked to sing the anthem mere hours before the game and blamed the disastrous performance on her nerves. "I'm usually a quick study and I’ve been learning songs for a long time," she told the Canadian daily newspaper. "I had learned all the lyrics, but nerves just got the best of me and I got really nervous and it all unwound from there."

She also took to Twitter to issue an apology for her astonishingly bad performance. "I'm embarrassed and deeply sorry,” she wrote. “I wish I'd had more time to learn the American anthem. Thanks so much for the crowd's help! ‪#memorialcup."

While she may have butchered the national anthem like no one in history, Normand's rendition of the Canadian national anthem, "O Canada" (which followed her performance of "Star-Spangled Banner") was flawless.
