Blip Launches Production Studio, Seeks to Expand

The online video distributor will now look to make its own content

Blip, a startup that distributes and monetizes online video, has decided to expand into production, announcing the launch of Blip Studios on Thursday.

Steve Woolf, previously vice president of content, will run the studio and has been promoted to the SVP level. Blip will build a network of shows, signing partnerships with existing talent and creating its own original series across genres like comedy, sci-fi and sports.

Its first three partnerships are with “Nostalgia Critic,” a series starring Doug Walker that appraises all things nostalgic, “Nostalgia Chick,” which critiques nostalgic TV and movies aimed at a female audience, and “Todd in the Shadows,” in which Todd Nathanson explains the context of mainstream pop songs all while lost in a shadow.

“The creation of Blip Studios as a multiplatform digital studio producing engaging and innovative content for the Blip network and its partners is a huge value-add for our business and a very natural growth progression for the company,” Kelly Day, CEO of Blip, said in a statement. “We are excited about our initial talent slate and expect to announce many more original series with major partners and other great talent in the near future.”

Just yesterday, Big Frame, a company largely dedicated to managing and monetizing talent, also indicated its desire to expand its production facilities. As online video continues to boom, companies are searching for the right balance of management, sales and distribution.

Blip will try to help increase the production value of its content partners' shows, as well as help with distribution and audience growth.

However, Blip will not abandon its existing business as a distribution platform that monetizes the videos it airs.
