Bob Berney and Albert Cheng joined Amazon Studios Monday in key roles: Berney will head movie distribution and marketing, while Cheng hops aboard as chief operating officer.
Berney, the now-former CEO of indie film marketing and distribution company Picturehouse, will be responsible for overseeing distribution and marketing for all Amazon Original Movies in his new role. The division, announced in January, is where Amazon Studios will produce and acquire original movies for theatrical release and early window distribution for Prime members.
The new department chief was previously behind the marketing and distribution for “Pan’s Labyrinth,” “The Passion of the Christ” and “My Big Fat Geek Wedding.” Berney is individually credited with relaunching Picturehouse.
Cheng was executive vice president and chief product officer of digital media at Disney ABC Group. In his new role, Cheng will oversee Amazon Studios’ efforts across all business operations and software development.
The new Amazon Studios COO won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Advanced Interactive Television, and is credited with leading Disney and ABC programming to its current wide range of digital platforms.
