LAT, NYT Top 2011 Pulitzer Prize Winners

Newspapers top journalism list with two each; L.A. Times wins for exposing Bell city corruption

The 2011 Pulitzer Prize winners and nominated finalists were announced on Monday.

The Los Angeles Times and New York Times each picked up a pair of rewards for reporting. The L.A. Times won for public service — for its exposure of city salary corruption in Bell, Calif., resulting in arrests — and feature photography (Barbara Davidson), while the New York Times was honored for its international reporting (Clifford J. Levy and Ellen Barry) and commentary (David Leonhardt).

Paige St. John of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune won the investigative reporting Pulitzer for her "examination of weaknesses in the murky property-insurance system vital to Florida homeowners" and "stirring regulatory action."

Despite a year that included the devastating earthquake in Haiti and Gulf oil spill, the Pulitzer jury decided not to give an award for breaking news coverage. (The Washington Post, however, won a Pulitzer for breaking news photography for its coverage of Haiti.)

Jesse Eisinger and Jake Bernstein of ProPublica picked up the Pulitzer for national reporting for work related to Wall Street and the nation’s economic meltdown. It was the first time a Pulitzer prize was awarded for work that did not appear in print, the board said.
