The film, a Paramount-MGM co-production, will star Dwayne Johnson as the eponymous hero. The son of Zeus, Hercules was renowned for his superior strength, but also for being subjected to 12 laborious adventures.

He fought a nine-headed hydra, a bull and a massive boar just to name a few. This tale picks up after Hercules has completed his twelve labors, when he leads a group of bloodthirsty mercenaries for hire.

The King of Thrace has hired Hercules and his band of mercenaries to train his army, at which point they begin to realize how vacuous their endless fighting has been.

Ryan Condal wrote the script based on the graphic novel, "Hercules: The Thracian Wars."

The film will open the week after Disney/Marvel's "Guardian of the Galaxy" and is the only other release slotted that month thus far. However, the summer of 2014 is beginning to fill up. Disney just moved its revisionist "Sleeping Beauty" tale, "Maleficent," to July 4 weekend and Universal said the fourth "Jurassic Park" film will bow June 13.
