The Hollywood Radio and Television Society has lined up some pretty flashy executive heavyweights for its annual cable newsmaker luncheon — including new Discovery Communications chief operating officer Peter Liguori.
It’s Liguori’s first big Hollywood speaking appearance since landing at Discovery. He’ll share a stage with Turner’s Steve Koonin, HBO’s Michael Lombardo, Rainbow’s Josh Sapan, MTV Networks’ Van Toffler and NBC U’s Lauren Zalaznick. The biggies will discuss the state of the world as cable peeps know it on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Century Plaza.
This panel has become one of the more interesting industry roundtables in recent years thanks in part to the fact that the broadcast chiefs apparently can’t be bothered to do an HRTS lunch anymore. It seems that because of different executive structures at different networks, nobody can find a way to put aside egos and just sit down for an hour to talk turkey about TV.
It’s not the end of the world — and, quite frankly, the webheads (as Variety might call ’em) had grown a bit boring in recent years. Unlike the days of Moonves-Littlefield, everybody’s on eggshells these days, perhaps worried that one casual quip will cause their entire network to melt down.
Cable leaders seem a bit more chill about the whole thing.
