Canadian-based Entertainment One will acquire movie distributor Alliance Films for $225 million

The Canadian-based Entertainment One will acquire movie distributor Alliance Films for $225 million, the companies announced on Friday.

The acquisition gives Entertainment One access to top independent films through Alliance’s distribution deals with The Weinstein Company, Focus Features, Relativity and others in foreign territories.

Entertainment One previously announced plans to expand its film operations and distribution in the United States.

“The combination of Entertainment One and Alliance Films will create the leading global independent film distribution business,” Darren Throop, President & CEO, Entertainment One, said in a prepared statement. “As a result of the acquisition, eOne will be a more competitive business in each of the geographic markets that we serve.”

Alliance is best known for distributing independent films in Canada, the United Kingdom and Spain.

“eOne and Alliance Films share similar values. We both have a strong commitment to supporting film, culture and talent in Canada and in each of our territories. We also have passion for this business. Joining the eOne family will provide our dedicated teams and partners more opportunities to work with great films and film makers from around the globe,” said Victor Loewy, Chairman and CEO, Alliance Films.

At the Toronto International Film Festival, Alliance is connected with numerous anticipated films including “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Anna Karenina” and “Place Beyond the Pines.”
