The series, billed as "an intense, mind-bending thriller," follows Secret Service agent Ethan Burke (played by Matt Dillon), who arrives in the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, Idaho, on a mission to find two missing federal agents. But instead of answers, Ethan’s investigation only turns up more questions.

"Wayward Pines" comes from "The Sixth Sense" director M. Night Shyamalan and is based on the novel "Pines" by Blake Crouch.

Gugino will fill the role of Kate Hewson, Burke's former partner in the Secret Service who lives in Wayward Pines. She's described as capable, loyal, fiery, blunt, and fearless. The love Kate and Ethan once shared still simmers just below the surface.

Chad Hodge ("The Playboy Club") is writing and executive producing the series, with Shyamalan, Donald De Line and Ashwin Rajan also executive producing. Shyamalan will also direct the first episode. "Wayward Pines" will premiere next year.

Earlier this year, Gugino was cast in the ABC pilot "Doubt."
