Kurt Cobain might be rolling over in his grave at this bit of news, but an "American Idol" contestant will interpret one of his songs tonight, executive producer Nigel Lythgoe told Ryan Seacrest.
Not surprisingly, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" will get the nod as the first Nirvana track to be reinterpreted on the hit Fox show. According to Lythgoe, it will be performed by recently hospitalized fan-favorite Casey Abrams.

Tonight's episode calls for each of the remaining twelve contestants to perform a song from his or her birth year — and Abrams, 20, was born just seven months before the grunge classic debuted in September 1991.

Abrams was forced to miss last Thursday's results show due to an untimely flare-up of ulcerative colitis, the chronic condition he suffers from. The recurrence required a stay at the hospital and a blood transfusion.
We're actually big fans of Abrams here at TheWrap, so we're curious to see what kind of spin he'll put on one of our favorite songs. We would not being feeling that way if Nirvana had been chosen by someone else — like, say, James Blunt clone Paul McDonald.
Luckily, McDonald was born in 1984, three years before Nirvana formed.
