Charlie Hunnam to Play Christian Grey in ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’

Writer EL James tweets the news just after casting Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele

“Sons of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam has been cast as Christian Grey in “Fifty Shades of Grey,” Universal Pictures and Focus Features’ hotly anticipated adaptation of E.L. James’ erotic novel.

James tweeted the news minutes after the announcement that Dakota Johnson had been cast as Anastasia Steele. Hunnam closed his deal more than a week ago, though Universal and Focus have kept his casting under wraps as they zeroed in Johnson, who TheWrap first reported was being eyed for the role.

Sam Taylor-Johnson (“Nowhere Boy”) is directing from a script by Kelly Marcel (“Saving Mr. Banks”), who adapted the erotic literary sensation by James. Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti are producing.

De Luca and Brunetti previously worked with Johnson on “The Social Network,” while Imogen Poots, who worked with De Luca on DreamWorks’ “Fright Night” remake, was also in contention.
