Sony announced Thursday that Elizabeth Banks will now star in her upcoming remake of “Charlie’s Angels” as Bosley, with Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska joining Kristen Stewart as the titular spy trio.

Banks is directing, producing and writing the film, which has had its release date moved out of its summer slot to Sept. 27, 2019.

In the new film, Charlie’s Townsend Agency has dramatically expanded since the events of the franchise’s previous installments, with the Angels in Banks’ film being one of many teams working for the agency around the world. Bosley, originally a male role played by David Doyle in the 1970s TV series and by Bill Murray in the 2000 film adaptation, serves as the technical adviser and comic relief, relaying mission information to the Angels from the mysterious Charlie.

Stewart joined the project last fall, and now has the rest of her team. Scott will also appear next year as Jasmine in Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Aladdin,” while “Angels” will be Balinska’s first major Hollywood role having previously taken film and TV roles in the U.K., most recently being the Sky TV drama “Nyela’s Dream.”

“Charlie’s Angels, for me, is one of the original brands to celebrate the empowered woman since its debut in the 70s. This film honors the legacy of Charles Townsend and his agency while introducing a new era of modern and global Angels,” Banks says. “I couldn’t be more excited to work with Kristen, Naomi and Ella to bring this chapter to fans around the world.”

This will be Banks’ second feature film as director, having made her feature debut with the 2015 film “Pitch Perfect 2.” she co-wrote the film with Jay Basu and is producing with Max Handelman through their Brownstone Productions banner. Doug Belgrad, who is also co-financing through his 2.0 Entertainment, and Elizabeth Cantillon are also producing.

Scott is represented by Echo Lake Entertainment, WME, Narrative PR, and Sloane Offer Weber & Dern. Balinska is represented by Identity Agency Group and UTA. Banks and Handelman are represented by Untitled Entertainment, UTA and Ziffren Brittenham.
