NBC's "Chicago Fire" executive producer Dick Wolf told reporters that he is highly optimistic about a season renewal for the drama.
"Hopefully, this show is growing," Wolf told reporters at Monday’s NBCU Press Day in Pasadena. "Hopefully, it’s coming back. And, hopefully it will be doing better next year. This has been an incredibly positive experience this season for everyone involved in the show."
The show has been pretty steady in the ratings in its first season – the last new episode in early April attracted about 6.4 million total viewers. And while Wolf said he’s hopeful about renewal, the series seems to forging ahead this season as if it’s positively coming back.
"We are optimistically looking at the end of the season as a jumping off point for next season," he said. In fact, in a further show of his optimism, the producer said they should have all the second season episodes planned in month and already know the first episode of a possible third season.
Though, something that the series doesn’t seem to be planning is an episode inspired by last week’s Boston bombings.
"It's tough dealing with terrorism," Wolf said. "The last thing we want to do is exploit a tragedy. That is so specific. It would be difficult."
Reporters couldn’t pin down Wolf on the status of a reported spin-off for the series, but, again, he said, “I’m optimistic.”
"Chicago Fire" airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on NBC.
