Just when you thought you’d be in serious Wicca withdrawal all winter long, Netflix has some “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” news that is sure to brighten your Winter Solstice: a two-season renewal.
Less than a week after dropping that surprise holiday special, the streamer has ordered 16 additional episodes of its Kiernan Shipka-led dark take on the Archie Comics teen witch, which will begin production in 2019 and launch in two batches, Parts 3 and 4. No word yet on when the new installments will drop or how the sixteen episodes will be divided among the two parts.
And yes, TheWrap has confirmed Netflix is going with “parts” instead of “seasons” when it comes to “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.” As all you witches know, Part 1 debuted back in October and Part 2 received an April 5, 2019 launch date last month.
“Praise Satan! I’m so grateful to my partners at Warner Brothers, Netflix, Berlanti Television, and Archie Productions for supporting this darker vision of the world’s most famous teen witch,” creator and executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said in a statement. “And I’m thrilled to be continuing to tell Sabrina’s chilling adventures with our incredible cast and crew, led by the unstoppable Kiernan Shipka.”
“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” imagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as “a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft.” Described as “tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist,” the series follows Sabrina as she wrestles “to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”
Shipka stars alongside Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis, Ross Lynch, Michelle Gomez, Chance Perdomo, Jaz Sinclair, Richard Coyle, Tati Gabrielle, Adeline Rudolph, Abigail Cowen, Lachlan Watson and Gavin Leatherwood.
Previously-announced newcomers for Parts 3 and 4 include Jedidiah Goodacre as Dorian Gray and Alexis Denisof as Mary Wardwell’s boyfriend, Adam Masters.
Aguirre-Sacasa, who also serves as chief creative officer of Archie Comics, is showrunner for the series and executive produces alongside “Riverdale” collaborators Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater and Lee Toland Krieger.
The drama hails from Warner Bros. Television-based Berlanti Productions.
