(Warning: This post contains spoilers for “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” through the Season 2 finale.)
If the closing moments of the second season finale of “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” hadn’t already made it clear that the show was going to take an even darker turn next season, then creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa did so Sunday by confirming the fiery setting Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) and co. will be entering when the show returns.
“I think it’s safe to say that we are going to Hell, yes,” he told TheWrap during the Television Critics Association press tour. “We’re going to Hell. It’s very fun. It’s very fun. It’s dangerous, but it’s really fun.”
For those who need a quick refresher, “Sabrina” Season 2 — which launched in April — ended with the half-human, half-witch teen telling her crew she planned to journey down to hell to rescue her boyfriend Nick (Gavin Leatherwood).
And while we know you’re itching to find out what that new chilling adventure looks like, Aguirre-Sacasa isn’t yet sure when Season 3 will launch — but it most likely won’t be in October, which is when Season 1 debuted in 2018.
“I don’t actually know. I don’t think we’d be ready for Halloween. I have no idea, not a clue,” he said.
But they are well into production, with Aguirre-Sacasa telling us: “We are writing Episode 8, we are starting to shoot Episode 6, so we’re nearing the halfway mark. And that’s been going great, I’m really proud of those episodes, they’re really, really fun.”
Now, if Sabrina does manage to save Nick from the fiery pit, does that mean she will end up with him — or her former love Harvey (Ross Lynch)?
“It’s funny, I love both those guys,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “I love Gavin and I love Ross. I think probably, I ship both couples. I have a soft spot for Harvey because he’s Sabrina’s longtime boyfriend in the comic books, but I cannot deny that Sabrina and Nick are a great, potent match. So yes, there is reason to hope for Harvey and Sabrina shippers. But Sabrina and Nick are pretty undeniable.”
Whenever we talk to the “Sabrina” boss, we always have to bug him about where he’s at with a possible crossover between the Netflix series and The CW’s “Riverdale,” as he is the showrunner on both teen dramas, which exist in the same universe. While he hasn’t ruled out the idea, he hasn’t figured out whether or not it’s feasible yet either.
“Listen, I’m so open for it and it feels like we have conversation about it all the time,” he said. “I still would love for it to happen.
Aguirre-Sacasa thinks at this point “it’s much more likely” fans of his shows will see “Riverdale” cross over with its upcoming spinoff “Katy Keene” — which stars Lucy Hale and features “Riverdale” alum Ashleigh Murray reprising her role as Josie — “just because it’s on the same network and we’re sharing cast.”
