Chris Brown was arrested Thursday in the United Kingdom for a 2023 assault at a London nightclub.

The 36-year-old R&B singer was taken into custody at his Manchester hotel. Charges had not yet been filed, but he is accused of assaulting producer Abe Diaw with a bottle of tequila and kicking him to the ground, causing “grievous bodily harm,” the Associated Press reports.

Diaw alleges that Brown attacked him unprovoked in February 2023, smashing him over the head with the bottle and punching and kicking him while he was on the ground. He sued the singer in October 2023 for $16 million (£12 million).

The alleged incident happened at the Tape nightclub in London’s upscale Mayfair neighborhood. The allegations and following lawsuit led to a criminal investigation, which led to Brown’s arrest after police were informed he had landed in Manchester.

“A 36-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Manchester shortly after 02:00hrs on Thursday, 15 May on suspicion of grievous bodily harm,” London police said in a statement to Rolling Stone. “He has been taken into custody, where he remains. The arrest relates to an incident at a venue in Hanover Square on 19 February 2023. The investigation is being led by detectives from the Central West Area Basic Command Unit.”

Per British law, police leave apprehended suspects unnamed until charges are filed.

Brown is scheduled to launch an international tour next month, which includes 10 stops in the U.K.

Representatives for Brown did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
