Cinetic Media has stepped up to release “Escape From Tomorrow,” the contorversial film shot entirely at Disney’s theme parks without permission, the company announced Monday.
Cinetic, a New York-based management and sales company, was handling sales for the movie and also represents the filmmaker, Randy Moore.
It decided to release the movie Oct. 11 through its own PDA distribution label after speaking with various other independent distributors. The company wasn’t sure who would step up and take it, but wanted to get in out in front of the public, feeling it could earn a small but devoted following.
The film will go day-and-date in select cities and on VOD.
The black-and-white film follows a man who begins to have a psychological breakdown on the last day of a family vacation. Its Sundance Film Festival premiere in January received lots of media attention because Moore shot it gonzo style at the territorial and protective compay’s theme parks without permission.
Moore’s staff used iPhones and handheld cameras to avoid drawing attention to themselves.
At Sundance, many speculated that Disney would fight the movie on variouis copyright infringement grounds; but as the New Yorker spelled out in great detail at the time, the film appears to fall under fair use laws, meaning Disney likely has no recourse. Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the film’s release plan.
There was much conversation about which company would step up to release the movie for that reason, speculation Cinetic just put to rest.
