Coachella 20th Anniversary Documentary to Air on YouTube Originals

“Coachella: 20 Years in the Desert” premieres on March 31 ahead of 2020 festival

A new feature-length documentary celebrating the 20th anniversary of the California music festival Coachella will premiere on YouTube Originals on March 31 ahead of the 2020 Coachella Festival, YouTube announced Monday.

YouTube Originals is partnering with Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on “Coachella: 20 Years in the Desert.” The documentary is produced and directed by Chris Perkel and features never-before-seen footage, interviews and performances of Coachella performers past and present who have traveled to Indio, California, over the 20 years of the festival.

Some of the performers featured in the documentary include Beyonce, Billie Eilish, Kanye West, Daft Punk, Travis Scott, BLACKPINK, LCD Soundsystem, Rage Against The Machine, Pixies, Swedish House Mafia, Jane’s Addiction, Björk, The White Stripes, Madonna, Moby, Beck, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Guns ‘N Roses, Jay-Z and more.

The Coachella doc joins other recent YouTube Originals focused on music, including Coldplay’s “Everyday Life – Live in Jordan” and “The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash.” The documentary will also be available to YouTube users for free with ads and ad-free for YouTube Premium members.

YouTube also announced Monday that it will return for the 10th year in a row as the official playlist and live stream partner for both weekends of Coachella, which takes place the weekend of April 10 and again on April 19.

Raymond Leon Roker and Paul Tollett serve as executive producers on the documentary, which is a Goldenvoice and Hamsterdam production, in association with AEG Studios.

Susanne Daniels is global head of original content for YouTube. Alex Piper, head of unscripted at YouTube Originals, and Margaret Burris, development lead at YouTube Originals, will oversee “Coachella: 20 Years in the Desert” for the global platform. Lyor Cohen is the global head of music for YouTube. Ali Rivera serves as head of artist partnerships and live music.

The 2020 Coachella festival features headliners Rage Against the Machine, Travis Scott, Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, Calvin Harris, Flume, Thom Yorke, Lil Uzi Vert and Run the Jewels.
