On Thursday’s “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert took a jaundiced look at next week’s Democratic Debate and its surprisingly large lineup, and told some jokes about it. (Shocker.)
This week it was announced that 12 candidates have qualified for the Oct. 15 debate, the largest number of people to participate in a presidential primary debate on a single night. Colbert discussed the situation as part of a segment he called “doin’ it donkey style,” you know, because of the Democratic Party’s mascot.
Colbert noted that among the candidates taking part is Bernie Sanders, who is still recovering from a recent heart attack. “But, just to be safe they have eliminated the StairMaster portion of the competition,” Colbert said, adding “He looks good actually. I should have a heart attack.”
Colbert then moved on to the fact that some Democrats are complaining about how many candidates are still in the race, citing one who told Politico: “I think we’re at a point when we’re really down to five candidates that have actual traction, and you have a lot of people auditioning for something else.”
Yes,” Colbert said, ending the bit with a reference to “Cats.”
“Which does explain why Cory Booker is planning to show up dressed as Rum Tum Tugger.”
