Our loss is our gain, it turns out, as Stephen Colbert's "StePhest Colbchella" featuring Daft Punk lost Daft Punk on Tuesday night but gained so much more.
Colbert was slightly annoyed when he reported to the audience that his plan to have Daft Punk on the show had been destroyed by MTV.
Both MTV and Comedy Central are owned by Viacom, and MTV made a deal with Daft Punk that the French electronica band would not appear on any Viacom shows before its "surprise" appearance at the MTV VMAs.
Colbert decided to ruin the surprise in a fit of alcohol-fueled bitter rage, as he said he hadn't found out about all of this until the day before StePhest Colbchella.

So, after tossing in an ad for the VMAs that said they'd be hosted by Chris Brown and feature special guests Paula Deen and the E-Trade baby, Colbert staged his own performance of Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" that might just have been better than Daft Punk itself, as Colbert lip-synced his way through all of 30 Rock, the set of "Charlie Rose," Washington D.C. and Henry Kissinger's office to bring us a performance with some amazing special guests (turns out that Bryan Cranston is a decent rollerskater).
