On Wednesday, Stephen Colbert gleefully recounted the first day of public hearings in the Donald Trump impeachment inquiry, and also took a moment to make fun of Trump’s family relationships in the process.

“It’s finally here. It’s finally arrived. The first day of live impeachment hearings,” Colbert said during his “The Late Show” monologue. “It’s what we’ve been praying for since the beginning of the Trump presidency: The end of the Trump presidency.”

Colbert then jumped into the hearings, which he said were “as dramatic as they were historic,” and joking “it was the biggest ratings hit for C-SPAN 3 since ‘Drunk History Starring Brett Kavanaugh.’”

Colbert touched on testimony by acting ambassador to Ukraine, Bill Taylor, who testified that one of his staff members personally overheard a phone call in which Trump asked the ambassador to the EU Gordon Sondland about efforts to pressure Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden.

About that testimony, Colbert joked “That’s like if they had a picture of Nixon breaking into the Watergate.”

Colbert then touched on Taylor’s testimony that, when asked what Trump thinks about Ukraine, Sondland said Trump “cares more about the investigations of Biden.”

“He also emphasized that President Trump cared more about the investigations of Biden, than he did about his son Eric, who the president described as ‘the teeth one,’” Colbert joked.
