As he often does, Stephen Colbert devoted some of his monologue on Wednesday’s episode of “The Late Show” to talking about the latest twists and turns in the ongoing impeachment inquiry into Donald Trump. And Colbert’s conclusion is that Trump is acting like a really dumb mob boss.

During the bit, Colbert talked about the testimony earlier this week of Alexander Vindman. The testimony was “a bombshell,” Colbert said, because according to the New York Times, Vindman told Congress that the official White House transcript of Trump’s phone call with the Ukrainian president “omitted crucial words and phrases.”

“This is huge. The White House intentionally left things out. It’s like the infamous 18 and a half minute-gap on Nixon’s Watergate tapes, if Nixon had left in all the bad stuff,” Colbert joked.

That’s when the mob boss analogy came in.

“How do you edit the transcript, and leave in ‘I’d like you to do us a favor though,’” Colbert said. “It’s like, a mobster whacking a a guy and going ‘don’t worry, cops got nothing. We got rid of some of his body. What I’m saying is, a large portion of Tony sleeps with the fishes.”
