Something was missing at the top of the show on TBS’s “Conan.”

Host Conan O’Brien used an elaborate set-up, involving his current drummer going missing in a freak “abandoned mine” incident, to welcome back his former bandleader Max Weinberg.

After drummer James Wormworth was presumed dead by O’Brien, Weinberg raised his hand from his seat in the audience. He had a pair of drumsticks on him and declared that he could play.

The longtime drummer for Bruce Springsteen, recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, performed as O’Brien’s bandleader from 1993 to 2010 on both “Late Night” and “The Tonight Show.”

When O’Brien made the jump to TBS for his current show, Weinberg did not join him. But he proved he still had the chops, and was more than capable of stealing the show with his wild and aggressive drumming.

“Conan” airs weeknights at 11 p.m. ET on TBS.
