Dade Hayes has been named executive editor of Broadcasting & Cable, the trade publication said Monday.
Hayes starts his new job immediately and will report directly to editor-in-chief Melissa Grego. He is being charged with helping to oversee editorial content across Broadcasting & Cable's print and digital platforms, as well as its live events.
It marks a return to journalism for Hayes, who joins from his most recent position as senior vice president at Rubenstein Communications. Hayes left the public relations firm a week ago, he told TheWrap.
"I was ready for a little change of pace," Hayes said. "I had a great time at Rubenstein, but I missed having a creative outlet and felt like there was more I still wanted to do in the editorial realm."
He joined Rubenstein in 2009 after he was ushered out in a round of cost-cutting at Variety. At the Hollywood trade, he served at various points as a reporter, New York bureau chief, and assistant managing editor.
Hayes also worked as a reporter and editor for such publications as Entertainment Weekly, the Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times.
At Rubenstein, Hayes worked with a number of prominent entertainment and media clients including Paramount Pictures, Tribeca Enterprises and the NFL Network.
In addition to his work as a reporter, Hayes has authored two books, "Open Wide: How Hollywood Box Office Became a National Obsession" (co-written with Jonathan Bing), and "Anytime Playdate: Inside the Preschool Entertainment Boom, or, How Television Became My Baby’s Best Friend."
Hayes succeeds Grego as executive editor, after she was promoted to editor-in-chief in November. She succeeded Ben Grossman, who left to join Twitter Media as head of global operations.
