Never one to shy from presidential politics, Dan Rather thinks Donald Trump is the “biggest propaganda coup” ISIS has had yet.
The former “CBS Evening News” anchor, whose fall from grace at the network was recently depicted in the Robert Redford film “Truth,” spoke to TheWrap about Trump’s appeal — and potential danger — to the county.
“What he said about Muslims, the effect of that is a great advantage for ISIS,” Rather said in an interview.
“This is the greatest propaganda coup for ISIS in recent times,” he continued, adding that the terror group can radicalize prospective followers by pointing out that a leading U.S. presidential candidate is anti-Muslim.
Despite harsh words for Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims entering the U.S., Rather warned the media not to underestimate the real estate mogul-turned-presidential candidate, calling him a really smart guy.
“That doesn’t answer the question, ‘If he’s smart, why does he say such dumb things?'” Rather said, asserting that all of the controversial comments Trump makes are “tactical moves” intended to attract the hard-right base.
