Netflix has dropped the first teaser for “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” and now we’re even more terrified of the Jim Henson-created fantasy world Thra than we were when watching the original 1982 film.
The 10-episode prequel series, set to launch on the streaming service Aug. 30, stars Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nathalie Emmanuel, as three Gelfling heroes — Rian, Brea and Deet, respectively — who learn of a villainous force called The Darkening in the preview video above.
Here’s the official description for “Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” per Netflix: Based on “The Dark Crystal,” Jim Henson’s groundbreaking 1982 feature film, “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” tells a new epic story, set many years before the events of the movie, and realized using classic puppetry with cutting edge visual effects. The world of Thra is dying. The Crystal of Truth is at the heart of Thra, a source of untold power. But it is damaged, corrupted by the evil Skeksis, and a sickness spreads across the land. When three Gelfling uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis, an adventure unfolds as the fires of rebellion are lit and an epic battle for the planet begins.
The voice cast also includes Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, Alicia Vikander, Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Key, ?”lafur Darri ?”lafsson, Simon Pegg, Andy Samberg, Alice Dinnean, Louise Gold, Neil Sterenberg and Victor Yerrid.
“Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” is directed by Louis Leterrier, who executive produces along with Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford. Jeffrey Addiss, Will Matthews, Javier Grillo-Marxuach and Blanca Lista are co-executive producers. Ritamarie Peruggi is a producer, Tim Wellspring is a line producer, Cameron Richardson is an associate producer, and Vivian Lee is a co-producer. The series hails from The Jim Henson Company.
