“Darkest Hour,” “Dunkirk,” “Murder on the Orient Express,” “The Post” and “The Shape of Water” have been nominated for the Art Directors Guild’s Excellence in Production Design Awards, the ADG announced on Thursday.

Those five films were nominated in the ADG’s period-film category, which typically supplies most of the Oscar nominees for Best Production Design. In the fantasy-film category, the nominees were “Beauty and the Beast,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “War for the Planet of the Apes” and “Wonder Woman.”

In the contemporary-film category, Art Directors Guild voters nominated “Downsizing,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird,” “Logan” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”

“Cars 3,” “Coco,” Despicable Me 3,” “The Lego Batman Movie” and “Loving Vincent” were nominated in the animation category.

Television nominees included “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” “Game of Thrones,” “The Crown,” “Stranger Things,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Mr. Robot,” “Twin Peaks,” “Big Little Lies” and “American Horror Story.”

Over the last decade, 80 percent of the Oscar nominees for production design have first received Art Directors Guild nominations, including all 10 winners. The ADG’s period category has been the most reliable indicator of Oscar success, followed by the fantasy category — although last year’s Oscar winner for production design, “La La Land,” was nominated by the ADG in the contemporary category.

Winners will be announced at the 22nd annual ADG Awards on January 27 in the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland.
