Darren Aronofsky has produced many a weird film, so he knows what’s gonna confuse and entertain audiences all at once. And he definitely thinks “One Strange Rock,” his new docuseries for Nat Geo, is gonna be a real trip for viewers. Especially the younger demo, who might enjoy it even more with a little help from Mary Jane.

“I’ve been to millennial parties where ‘Planet Earth’ was playing in the background,” Aronofsky said when asked about the generation’s interest in this kind of programming, at a panel for the series at the Television Critics Association press tour on Saturday.

He then suggested that the younger crowd might be especially into the show if they light up a joint beforehand. “Well, it’s legal now in California,” he said about the use of recreational marijuana, to the laughter of reporters in the room.

Aronofsky is producing the new 10-episode global event series for Nat Geo, which is anchored by an elite group of astronauts who see Earth’s bigger picture and provide unique perspectives and relate personal memoirs of our planet seen from space. Host Will Smith will guide viewers on the epic journey.

Arif Nurmohamed from Nutopia serves as the series showrunner and founder and CEO of Nutopia, Jane Root, serves as an executive producer.

The Nutopia and Protozoa Pictures series is scheduled to premiere globally on National Geographic in March 2018 in 172 countries and 43 languages.
