Former Boston Red Sox Star David Ortiz Shot and Wounded in Dominican Republic, Father Says

Former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz was shot and wounded at an entertainment center in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, his father, Leo Ortiz told ESPN on Sunday night.

“They called to tell me that David is injured and that they took him to a medical center, but they did not tell me how he is or exactly where he was transferred,” Leo Ortiz told ESPN reporter Enrique Rojas via telephone from the Dominican Republic.

The doctor who first treated Ortiz said the baseball great was shot in the lower back and that a bullet came out his stomach, Dionisio Soldevila, a radio reporter from the Dominican Republic, told ESPN.

According to CBS Sports, The incident took place at a lounge in the eastern part of the capital of the Dominican Republic, where 43-year-old Ortiz was born and raised.

In his long major league career, Ortiz was named to 10 All-Star teams and won three World Series with the Red Sox. He was named World Series MVP in 2013, when he led the Red Sox to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals four games to two.
