David Simon to Eric Holder: No More ‘Wire’ for You

“The Wire” creator responds to the Attorney General’s request for a sixth season with appropriate sarcasm

"The Wire" will come back for a sixth season, its creator David Simon wrote last week — but only if the U.S. changes what he calls its "misguided" war on drugs.

Simon's tongue-in-cheek email to the British newspaper the Times of London came in response to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder's gushing remarks while meeting last Tuesday with former cast members of "The Wire" that urged Simon and co-creator Ed Burns put together a sixth season.

"Having looked at those clips again, I'm reminded how great that series was," Holder said during a meeting with actors Jim True-Frost, Wendell Pierce and Sonja Sohn. "I want to speak directly to Mr. Burns and Mr. Simon: Do another season of 'The Wire.' … I want another season, or a movie."

Not surprisingly, the outspoken Simon replied sarcastically to Holder's request.

"The Attorney General's kind remarks are noted and appreciated," he wrote in the email published by the Times. "I've spoken to Ed Burns and we are prepared to go to work on season six of 'The Wire' if the Department of Justice is equally ready to reconsider and address its continuing prosecution of our misguided, destructive and dehumanizing drug prohibition."

The final episode of "The Wire" aired in March 2008 and Simon is busy producing his new HBO series "Treme," currently in its second season.

Still, here's hoping Holder complies and Simon makes good on his promise — another season of "The Wire" sounds good to us, too.
