‘Destroyer’ Trailer: Nicole Kidman Undergoes Dramatic Transformation as Undercover Cop (Video)

Kidman plays Erin Bell, an LAPD detective whose life was shattered by a gang she tried to enter undercover 17 years ago

Nicole Kidman is virtually unrecognizable in the trailer for her new thriller “Destroyer.”

The Annapurna Pictures film tells the story of Erin Bell, an LAPD detective whose life was shattered by a gang she tried to enter undercover 17 years ago. While the circumstances of that mission are not immediately revealed, we do see Erin determined to track down the leader of that gang (Toby Kebbell) on his return to L.A.

In a new trailer released Wednesday, the timeline flips between a young Bell going undercover for the first time to the present day, when she is still haunted by her violent past.

“You can be better than me,” Kidman tells her teenage daughter in a heart-wrenching scene inside a diner. “I am mad, I am still mad … it’s burned a circuit in my brain,” she continues before bullets start flying.

“Destroyer” is directed by Karyn Kusama, written by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, and produced by Fred Berger, Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi.

Sebastian Stan, Tatiana Maslany, Bradley Whitford, Jade Pettyjohn and Scoot McNairy round out the cast.

According to the studio’s description:

“Destroyer” follows the moral and existential odyssey of LAPD detective Erin Bell who, as a young cop, was placed undercover with a gang in the California desert with tragic results. When the leader of that gang re-emerges many years later, she must work her way back through the remaining members and into her own history with them to finally reckon with the demons that destroyed her past.

“Destroyer” opens in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Dec. 25 and expands in January.
