Nik Wallenda’s Skyscraper Walk Ratings Fall Short of Canyon Walk

Blindfolded portion of Discovery Channel special draws 6.7 million viewers

Nik Wallenda experienced a fairly significant drop on Sunday. Luckily, it wasn’t from his tightrope, but still…

The Discovery Channel special “Skyscraper Live With Nik Wallenda,” which saw professional daredevil Wallenda make two tightrope walks between skyscrapers in Chicago — one of them blindfolded — averaged 5.82 million total viewers on Sunday night.

That’s down pretty sharply from Wallenda’st big stunt last year, “Skywire Live With Nik Wallenda,” which averaged 8.5 million total viewers.

During the blindfolded portion of Wallenda’s tightrope walk, the special averaged 6.7 million total viewers.

The initial walk, which aired from 8:35 to 8:43 p.m., averaged 5.84 million total viewers.

Last year’s special peaked at 13 million viewers, during the time when Wallenda crossed the Little Colorado River gorge near the Grand Canyon.

In the 25-54 demographic, Sunday’s Wallenda special averaged a 2.17 rating for Discovery.

Despite the ratings drop compared to last year’s special, “Skyscraper Live With Nik Wallenda” was Discovery’s most-watched telecast of 2014.
