Disney Interactive Unveils ‘Infinity’ Gaming Platform

The new gaming platform appears to compete with Activision's successful "Skylander" franchise

Disney Interactive unveiled Disney Infinity on Tuesday, the long-awaited gaming platform that allows gamers to transport plastic figurines of Disney cartoons on screen as playable characters.

Disney InteractiveSeventeen toy figurines from Disney's treasure chest of movie characters will become playable avatars across a variety of devices, including mobile phones and videogame consoles in what co-president John Pleasants called "a new way to interact with the best of Disney on one game platform, both now and in the future."

“With this innovative approach to gaming," Pleasants said, "Disney Infinity will bring to life new characters, stories and environments from The Walt Disney Company over time in a way that will delight fans and gamers alike.”

The platform, which Disney said would be more than just a single game, allows gamers to play with Disney characters in a variety of themed sets. The first sets to be released in June will be based around "The Incredibles," "Monsters University" and "Pirates of the Caribbean."

Players will be able to play together online in a virtual "Toy Box."

Infinity appears to be Disney's answer to popular new videogame platforms attracting younger audiences, namely Activision's "Skylanders." Last March, Activision said it sold more than 30 million toys for the game.

“Disney Infinity combines prominent Disney and Pixar characters and scenarios in a way that mimics how kids play in real life,” John Blackburn, vice president and general manager of the developer Avalanche Software, said in a statement. “With our platform’s unique gameplay mechanics and innovative approach to user generated content within the “Toy Box” mode, Disney Infinity will spark imaginations and provide endless hours of fun and creativity.”
