Disney Preparing to Lay Off About 200 People

Most of the positions cut are in distribution

Walt Disney Studios is preparing to lay off about 200 employees, primarily in distribution.

Some staffers in home entertainment and product management also will be affected.

The people who are losing their jobs will be notified some time next week.

Disney has seen revenue in its home entertainment division decline recently.

The total number of people to be laid off works out to less than 5 percent of the company’s overall workforce of approximately 5,000.

The studio has made a series of organizational changes over the past 18 months since Rich Ross became its chairman.

In January 2010, soon after Ross took over as chairman, the company instituted a small round of layoffs.

Lionsgate recently completed a smaller restructuring.

On March 20, that studio made a net reduction of about 2 percent of its 500-person workforce.

Lionsgate's overall reduction was about 10 people. But that company made hires as well as layoffs. While it cut members of its home entertainment staff, it made several hires in its digital business.
