‘Divergent’ Gets an IMAX Release, Hoping to Be Another ‘Hunger Games’

The big screen adaptation of Veronica Roth’s bestselling novel will be digitally remastered into the format for its March 21 release

"Divergent," the futuristic action adventure that Summit Entertainment hopes will be another "The Hunger Games" or "Twilight," will get an IMAX release when it hits theaters next year.

The big-screen adaptation of Veronica Roth‘s bestselling novel will be digitally remastered into the format and released in IMAX theaters worldwide beginning on March 21, 2014, the company said Thursday.

"Divergent" stars Shailene Woodley ("The Descendants") and Kate Winslet in the story of a dystopic society where people are segregated according to their personalities. In that world, a young woman discovers she is part of the Divergent group and finds out that there is a conspiracy underway to destroy everyone with that label.

Roth's books form a trilogy so there are plenty of sequel opportunities if audiences embrace the film.

“With The Hunger Games and Twilight franchises, our Lionsgate and Summit partners have proven to be a powerful force in adapting novels for the global theatrical marketplace,” Greg Foster, CEO of IMAX Entertainment, said in a statement. “We’re thrilled that IMAX audiences across the globe are going to be able to experience the first installment of this next highly successful franchise in the most immersive way possible.”
