Donald Trump Slams ‘Failing’ New York Times: ‘Fake News Joke!’

POTUS continues Twitter assault on media amid trouble over GOP health care bill

President Trump continues to lash out at media coverage of him, on Wednesday slamming the “failing” New York Times for what he called “false story after false story about me.”

Trump escalated his fight by suggesting Times reporters have failed to follow sound journalistic practices.

“They don’t even call to verify the facts of a story,” the president charged. “A Fake News Joke!”

Trump didn’t specify which story — or stories — in the Times he found objectionable. Though 10 minutes, later he tweeted another critique of the media for reports “that I am not totally engaged in healthcare.”

That suggests he might have objected to Glenn Thrush and Jonathan Martin’s story in the Times headlined “On Senate Health Bill, Trump Falters in the Closer’s Role,” which was posted online late Tuesday.

“Until Tuesday afternoon, the president was largely on the sidelines as the fate of one of his most important campaign pledges played out,” the reporters wrote, adding that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell sidestepped questions about whether the president “had command of the details of the negotiations.”

A representative for the Times responded, “We always call the White House for comment. The president’s tweet is incorrect.”

In addition, Thrush tweeted that TIRS reporters “spoke to many, many members of [Trump’s] staff yesterday.”
