A British miniseries starring "The Wire" alum Dominic West as real-life British serial killer Fred West leads the nominees for the 2012 BAFTA TV Awards, while "Downton Abbey" star Maggie Smith has received a best supporting actress nomination.
"Appropriate Adult," which covered the spree in which Fred West killed 12 girls and young women and then committed suicide before he stood trail, received four BAFTA TV nominations, including best actor for West, best actress for co-star Emily Watson, best supporting actress for Monica Dolan and best mini-series.
"Downton Abbey" star Smith, who plays the tough Dowager Countess of Grantham, Violet Crawley, was the sole nominee for the PBS series.

Tied with three nominations: BBC's drama "Sherlock," with a best actor nod for Benedict Cumberbatch and supporting actor nominations for co-stars Martin Freeman and Andrew Scott, and Channel 4's drama "This Is England '88," with nominations for best actor (Joseph Gilgun), actress (Vicky McClure) and miniseries.
BBC1 led all channels with 22 nominations, followed by BBC2 with 15, ITV1 with 13 and BBC4 with 10.
Meanwhile, the Emmy-winning ABC sitcom "Modern Family" is among the nominees for best international series. The complete list of nominees is available at the BAFTA website.
The BAFTA TV Awards winners will be announced on May 27.
