‘Downton Abbey’ Star Maggie Smith Has Yet to Watch an Episode

Maggie Smith told "60 Minutes" that she hasn't "actually seen" the hit PBS period drama

"Downton Abbey" fascinates millions of viewers on a weekly basis, but series star Maggie Smith isn't one of them: She says she's never seen an episode.

"I haven't actually seen it," she told "60 Minutes" in an interview that airs Sunday. "I don't sit down and watch it."

Still, the 78-year-old actress, who portrays Lady Grantham on the PBS period drama, says she's very proud of the show and "will look at it when it's all over, maybe."

Smith said she doesn't like to watch herself because "I always see things that I would like to do differently and think, 'Oh why in the name of God did I do that?'"

She isn't the only Academy Award-winning British thespian who doesn't plan her schedule around "Downton."

Jeremy Irons told the Television Critics Assocation in January that "television doesn't end with 'Downton Abbey,'" but then quickly clarified he's never actually seen the show.

"I don't watch very much television," Irons admitted. "I've never seen 'Downton Abbey.' So I don't know what I'm talking about, basically. I'm sure it's splendid."
