‘Masked Singer’: Eagle on Those *So Close* Judge Guesses, How ‘That F—ing Costume’ Altered Plans

“The Masked Singer” fans waved goodbye to The Eagle on Wednesday’s episode of Fox’s whacky celebrity singing competition after the rock ‘n’ roll version of our national bird was eliminated and revealed to the world to be talk-show host, podcaster and addiction medicine specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky.

Pinsky’s Eagle, who initially sang Meatloaf’s “I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That),” was knocked out of the sky by The Flower. Ironically, Eagle was permanently grounded by flightless bird The Penguin, who won the “smackdown” survival round.

For his second song — his last chance to remain in the competition — Pinsky performed “These Boots Were Made for Walking” by Nancy Sinatra. That one, which Pinsky told TheWrap he didn’t prepare for as much (no one, especially a celebrity’s personal publicist, thinks they’re going to lose in the first round), was closer to what his original plan was.

“I was preparing like [Frank] Sinatra songs and things. And then I put that f—ing costume on,” the trained opera singer said. “I just announced immediately we have to go a totally different direction.”

“This is going to be a rock character,” Pinsky recalled his change-of-plans after producers showed him the design. “I came to that meeting– because I sing national anthems at sporting events and stuff, I just had a bald eagle in my head. I just came there and said, ‘What about Bald Eagle?’ and they went, ‘Oh my God, that’s what we wanted you to do!’”

But when costume designer Marina Toybina gave Eagle some Jimi Hendrix flair, Drew knew it was time to rock. And he was going down with that ship.

“The next song was going to be ‘Pour Some Sugar on Me,’” Pinsky told us.

We’ll never get that one.

One of the most charming parts of Fox’s highly rated “Masked Singer” is the really bad guesses from judges Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong, Robin Thicke and Nicole Scherzinger. In Eagle’s case, McCarthy and Jeong, both of whom know Dr. Drew pretty well — Were. So. Close.

McCarthy guessed Eagle was Adam Carolla, Pinsky’s “Loveline” partner for decades and his current co-host on popular podcast the “Adam and Dr. Drew Show.” (And no, Carolla did not know Pinsky was doing “The Masked Singer,” Pinsky told us. The Carolla crew “doesn’t ask a lot of questions,” he said. That checks out.)

“I was like ‘Oh my God! Holy crap!’” Pinsky said of McCarthy’s *this close* guess.

It got even crazier from there when Jeong told Eagle he knew who he was, and added, “I used to fill in for you.”

Jeong, also an actual medical doctor, did used to fill in for Pinsky on syndicated radio series “Loveline.” But the “Dr. Ken” alum was actually thinking of Craig Ferguson, and he went with the Scottish-American comedian instead.

A total flip of the eagle — er, bird — to Dr. Drew.

“The Masked Singer” will unmask another celebrity next Wednesday beginning at 8/7c on Fox.
