Elle Fanning struggles to transition from Ramona to Ray in a new “About Ray” trailer.
Directed by Gaby Dellal, the movie stars Fanning as Ray, a teenager whose family struggles to adjust as she transitions into a man. Naomi Watts plays his single mother, Maggie, who must track down Ray’s biological father, played by Tate Donovan, to get his legal consent to allow Ray’s transition.
Susan Sarandon plays Ray’s lesbian grandmother who has a hard time accepting that she now has a grandson. They must each confront their own identities and learn to embrace change and their strength as a family in order to ultimately find acceptance and understanding.
“I’m done with being an exception,” Fanning says in the trailer for the film, demanding to be accepted in her chosen gender.
The Weinstein Company acquired the film, which was previously titled “Three Generations,” at the Cannes Film Festival in May for $6 million. It is written by Dellal and Nikole Beckwith, and produced by Peter Saraf, Marc Turtletaub and Dorothy Berwin.
“About Ray” hits theaters Sept. 18.
