In the previous look we had at “Rocketman,” director Dexter Fletcher assured us that Elton John wanted Taron Egerton to play him in the biopic on his life. But in this latest featurette, we get to hear it from the Rocketman himself.

“It had to be as honest as possible. The lows were very low, but the highs were very high, and that’s how I wanted the film to be,” the real Elton John says in the new promo video for the film.

Perhaps as an answer to the criticisms of Fox’s wildly successful Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the promos for “Rocketman” have demonstrated first that its star Egerton is himself singing John’s classic tunes, but also that the film is striving for accuracy.

And yet producer Matthew Vaughn stresses in the trailer that the filmmakers have taken liberties in other ways, embellishing the magic of the live performances in order to create something that’s “surreal but real.”

“This is more than just a biopic,” star Jamie Bell says in the clip. “This is exactly how an Elton John story should be told.”

“Rocketman” stars Egerton as Elton John, along with Richard Madden, Bell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Stephen Graham and Tate Donovan. Fletcher is directing the music biopic that opens on May 31.
