Emmys: Sean Spicer Parodies His Inflated Inauguration Crowd Claims in Surprise Appearance

“I understand why you would want one of these guys around,” Colbert says

A lot of people assumed that the Emmys would get political this year, but few probably expected an actual former political figure to make an appearance.

During host Stephen Colbert’s opening monologue, which featured quite a few political jokes, a surprise guest showed up on stage with his podium in tow — former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer.

Proving that he has a sense of humor, he compared the size of the Emmys audience to the size of Donald Trump’s inauguration crowd.

And, in typical Spicey fashion, he exaggerated.

“This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys. Period! Both in person and around the world,” he said, parodying his comments following the inauguration.

No, it was literally, exactly the same line.

“This was the largest audience ever to witness an inauguration, period,” Spicer said at the time. “Both in person and around the globe.”

“That really soothes my fragile ego. I understand why you would want one of these guys around,” Colbert responded, speaking of the former White House mouthpiece.

After Spicer was done, Colbert thanked Melissa McCarthy for her appearance. The actress was in the audience after having won the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series award at the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend. She was honored for her work playing Sean Spicer this season on “Saturday Night Live.”

After his performance on the Emmys, maybe McCarthy should share her Emmy with him.
