ESPN Is Closing 3D Channel Due to Lack of Viewer Adoption

ESPN 3D will be gone by the end of the year

Sports fans: don't rush out and buy those 3D TV's just yet. ESPN is closing its ESPN 3D channel after limited home adoption, the station told TheWrap Wednesday.

"We are committing our 3D resources to other products and services that will better serve fans and affiliates," the company told TheWrap. "Nobody knows more about sports in 3D than ESPN, and we will be ready to provide the service to fans if or when 3D does take off. As technology leaders, we continue to experiment with things like Ultra High Definition television production tools to produce our current ESPN family of HD channels."

ESPN 3D is (and soon will be "was") available through agreements with DIRECTV, Charter, Comcast, Bright House Networks, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, AT&T U-verse, Google Fiber and Verizon FiOS TV

The channel will be gone by year's end, the company said. The decision comes amid major cutbacks at the sports giant.
