A24 has created a new featurette about “Ex Machina” director Alex Garland, whose sci-fi movie was a hit in limited release last weekend.

The film stars Oscar Isaac as a billionaire inventor who handpicks a young programmer (Domhnall Gleeson) to test a new creaton — a brilliant and beautiful female robot (Alicia Vikander).

“The real underlying story is about a machine becoming human, or at least a machine becoming equal to a human and then arguably better or more interesting. Then you’ve got to ask yourself, is that a good thing or a bad thing,” said Garland, whose personal opinion is that it’ a good thing.

Garland is the screenwriter of “28 Days Later,” “Sunshine” and “Dredd” who makes his directorial debut with “Ex Machina.” Garland said it was his past experiences on those films that informed his work on this one.

The filmmaker said he surrounded himself with talented crew members for his first outing behind the camera. Those trusted collaborators also appear on camera, including producer Allon Reich and several key department heads including a member of the VFX team.
