Facebook has acquired Face.com, an Israel-based facial recognition site, the companies announced Monday.
The deal marks Facebook's first major acquisition since it purchased the mobile photo-sharing app Instagram for an unprecedented $1 billion in April.
Terms of the deal, which is expected to close in the next few weeks, are undisclosed.
In a blog post on the company's website, Face.com's CEO Gil Hirsch hinted that the acquisition was another move toward expanding in the mobile market.
"We love building products, and like our friends at Facebook, we think that mobile is a critical part of people's lives as they both create and consume content, and share content with their social graph," he wrote.
Face.com already licenses the technology behind Facebook's Photo Finder and Photo Tagger apps. It updated its public API in March to enable third-party apps to gauge the moods and ages of people in pictures.
