‘Fast and Furious 7’ Opens No. 1 in First 12 Markets Overseas

The high-octane action sequel takes in $16.9 million at box office in first day of release for Universal

“Fast and Furious 7” roared out of the gate in its debut overseas, opening at No. 1 in all 12 markets in which it rolled out and taking in $10.2 million at the box office.

Universal’s high-octane sequel opens Friday in 4,003 theaters in North America, where it is titled “Furious 7.”

Overseas it was pacing 60 percent ahead of 2013’s “Fast and Furious 6” in those same 12 markets. By Friday, it will have opened in 63 foreign territories. Preview screenings in an additional 22 markets raised the total for “Fast and Furious 7” to $16.9 million, and it was easily the best opening day at the overseas box office for the franchise.

The top territory was Germany, where it grossed $2.6 million, well ahead of the $1.4 million that “Fast 6” took in. In France, it totaled $2.5 million compared to the $1.9 million “Fast 6.”
